In-Mold Decoration (IML/IMD)
In Mold Decorating
Control panels require a streamlined design that is efficient, effective, and innovative with clearly defined smooth edges and compatibility with surrounding instrumentation. The process used to achieve these concepts is referred to as in-mold decoration that includes a set of processes that create control panels and surfaces that are excellent décor with a practical purpose.
For over 30 years, King Epoxy Technology has been meeting our clients’ challenges and providing them with components that perfectly integrate into their designs. The key to our success is our vision and ability to take our experience and apply it to a new project.
KTP In-Mold Decorations
In-mold decorations, in-mold labels, or IML combines graphics with injection molded plastic to create seamless products without using secondary laminating processes. King Epoxy Technology’s heat or vacuum forms curved shapes that wrap around edges to produce a visually appealing product without gaps at the edges.
Our unique method of combining a decorative overlay with the molding process adds durability to graphics and minimizes manufacturing costs while adding design flexibility. When a customer is using a control panel, the graphic overlay is the first thing they see and can be described as the face of a product. They are used on controls and capacitive surfaces and provide concise and clear brand identification.
An essential aspect of the in-mold decorative process is the production of high-quality molded plastic control panels with overlays that meet the requirements of a product’s design with correct aesthetic appearance. Adherence to these factors has made King Epoxy Technology the leader in the design and manufacture of button controls, control panels, and membrane switches.
When designing the features of a control panel, functionality is a vital concern and the purpose for its manufacture. A secondary element is its aesthetic appeal in order to make it intuitive and easy to manipulate. King Epoxy Technology’s highly experienced engineers work closely with our customers to ensure that both factors of a product are accomplished. Though functionality is essential, a pleasant and enjoyable appearance enhances the functionality and increases customer interest.
About How In-Mold Decorations are Created
The manufacture of in-mold decorations at King Epoxy Technology takes place in an injection mold machine where plastic parts are shaped, and the decorative elements added. During the injection molding process, the precision cut and formed film, with printed graphics, is attached to the injection tooling before the tooling closes. The expertise of KTP and our trained technicians ensures a smooth, precise, and accurate application.
King Epoxy Technology has perfected, improved, and developed the necessary technical skills that are required to meet the needs and demands of our customers. All graphics are securely attached and sealed such that they cannot shift or peel.
A wide variety of high-quality polymers are used by King Epoxy Technology to form the substrate of the product. The overlay is tightly and securely bonded to the substrate so that their union appears as a single united piece.
Once the molded product and overlay are combined, they are carefully inspected for quality, appearance, and compliance with customer requirements. Every product produced by King Epoxy Technology undergoes close scrutiny to continue our reputation for excellence and precision.
The Benefits of In-Mold Decorations
Modern manufacturing demands and requires smooth and efficient processes to produce quality products quickly and on time. King Epoxy Technology’s staff of experts have worked to develop production and delivery methods that meet and exceed the demands of our customers. The process of in-mold decoration eliminates the need for certain finishing and after production processes and offers planning and design flexibilities.
- Manufacturing Costs – The key to a successful business is eliminating costly finishing processes. In-mold decorations remove the need for pressure sensitive adhesives to bond overlays to the molded plastic.
- Durability – Since label material is permanently and securely bonded to the molded plastic, it is impossible to remove or peel it off without damaging the plastic, which is essential for the life span of appliances and medical instruments.
- Protection – Products need to be protected against wear, abrasion, and stress. The tight bonding of in-mold decorations offers a protective shield against abuse and ensures the life span of the product.
- Label Options – In-mold decorations offers a wide array of label options due to its design flexibility, which include label materials, thicknesses, and the ability to meet different durability requirements.
